Bristol’s smallest pub, built into the old city wall by Colston Avenue
The White Lion is a cosy traditional pub at Quay Head, with a visible section of Bristol’s medieval city wall forming its back wall. Inside, expect Wickwar Wessex cask ales, changing guest beers, cocktails, cider and a dog-friendly welcome.

Inside
A small bar with a long history
The White Lion has been a pub since at least 1806 and was once known locally as the “cheese pub”. Its old city wall remains visible inside, while the steps down to the gents come from the former city gaol. It is a compact, sociable place for conversation, a pint and the occasional singalong.
Outside
Pints and people-watching at Quay Head
Outdoor seating faces the Cenotaph piazza, giving you a spot to watch Bristol pass by with a drink in hand. Dogs are welcome, and outdoor food service is available. The pub is open until 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
